Kissi Area (Guinea)

Pomdo-style Figure

prior to the mid-15th century

Stone

This figure is probably from the pre-Kissi inhabitants. The practice of carving stone images seems to have ceased by the time the Portuguese arrived in the mid-15th century. Pomdo refers to the vertically oriented style, as opposed to the headed attributed to the Sapi who were pre-Portuguese inhabitants closer to the coast.
